The LEDA taxonomic core
The LEDA project selected ca. 3000 priority vascular plant species
for the first edition of the LEDA Traitbase. The selection was made
according to the species frequencies in the core countries UK, The
Netherlands and Germany, disregarding extremely rare species.
The taxonomic core of the LEDA Traitbase consists of one synonymized
plant list at the species level, completed with authorities. The
list was collated from the national lists of the British Isles
(Stace, 1997), the Netherlands (Van der Meijden 1990), Germany
(Wisskirchen & Haeupler 1998), Norway (based on Lid & Lid 1994) and
species lists composed by local experts of Belgium, the Czech
Republic (an updated version for Central Europe based upon
Ehrendorfer 1973), the Nordic list for Scandinavia (Thomas
Karlsson), Poland, France (Kerguélen 1999), Latvia (Gavrilova &
?ulcs 1999), and Lithuania.
These lists as well as additional lists from other regions of Europe
are operational through the SynBioSys-Europe project. They have been
cross-checked by taxonomists and are now permanently available
through http://www.synbiosys.alterra.nl/eu/.
In the LEDA Traitbase the nationalists are all incorporated as
separate entities which can be selected for both input and output. A
species identifier links data from the different species lists of
different countries. This enables users to use their own national
flora lists when retrieving trait data for single species or species
list (e.g.relevés and plant community descriptions).
